O- is the Universal Blood type, making up 9% of the population. This means that any patient with any of the 8 blood types can receive O- blood to help them through treatments or trauma accidents. People with type O- blood are often referred to as universal blood donors.

O- people can only receive O- blood which makes this blood type extremely important. Given the vital role of blood type O- in supporting all patients, O- blood donations are always needed.

• Who can participate?
  • This program is open only to donors with type O- blood who have a Bloodworks Northwest Donor Portal Account.
• How do I sign up?
  • Simply complete the Universal Donor Challenge sign-up survey above. Participation is limited to the first 1,000 O- donors, so don’t wait!
• When will I find out if I am accepted into the program?
  • You will receive an email confirmation by the end of April if you are one of the 1000 donors.
• How do I earn points?
  • You’ll earn points for each successful donation and additional bonuses

• What if I'm deferred or have an unsuccessful donation?
  • If you are deferred or your donation is unsuccessful you will receive 250 points.
• When will I receive my points?
  • Points will be added to your Donor Portal account on the Monday following your donation, typically between 10:00–11:00 AM. Keep an eye on your account to track your progress and see your rewards stack up!
• Do my points expire?
  • Donor’s available points will become inactive 6-months from their last donation date.   
    • Donor’s points will become reinstated when they return for their next donation. 
  • Donor’s available points will expire 8-months from their last donation date.
